  Long Term Members

After our May Gadfly hit the streets - and litter boxes - of the neighborhood, a hue and cry arose in the gym the likes of which hasn’t been heard since Ted Finland ripped loose a pec muscle attempting a 500 lb. bench press. That was back in the bad old days, the 70’s, when hueing and crying, and a bunch of other noises were common. But in this new, civilized, gentrified era, “What,” you ask, “could cause such a fuss?” Why, it was the Long Term Member article, which we thought was just an innocent little tribute to some of our originals from friends and family alike. We’ve heard an outpouring of vindictiveness and questions on this. “What about so and so you clowns?” Or, “Hey muscle heads, whatshisname’s been here too long; mention him and maybe he’ll leave.” And so fourth. Ok, ok. Here are more long timers.

Bob Candler comes to mind immediately. Here almost from the start, Bob’s high school sports career, football, basketball was winding down, and he was looking for a place to hang out. Bob soon became “Big Bob,” to distinguish him from all the smaller Bob’s. To the gym’s benefit, Bob found a home. He developed big muscles and remained courteous to and considerate of other members. A real oddity in some gyms.

We’re pretty sure another attorney brought Ed Palmer in. Ed dazzled us initially with his pension for Olympic style lifting. He’s calmed down some, but a more consistent and valued member you couldn’t find this side of Venice Beach. We would’ve included Bob Edwards in this edition, but Bob up and left for Florida a month or so ago. He was probably provoked he didn’t make the first article. Too bad because one of the funniest gym stories ever includes Bob Edwards.

And then there’s Frank Blanche. “He’s so hot,” is the phrase on most women’s lips - a few men’s too - when Frank strolls by. Actually that’s it on Frank. We’re not going to add to his mythic status. Can we ferret out more long timers next time?  Wait and see.

Group Exercise at Gibson's Gym

by Coordinator Missie Wilkinson

It was a great summer for classes here at Gibson’s. We appreciate your dedication, and hope it continues into the fall. Please pick up a copy of our updated class schedule, which goes into effect on the 12th, at the desk or in the group exercise room. The most exciting addition to our schedule is Shabazz’s hip hop class. Two demo classes were offered in August and received rave reviews.  Hope to see you all there!
